Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the effect of abdominal binders on postoperative pulmonary function in patients undergoing midline laparotomy.
  • To assess the influence of abdominal binders on pain control, ambulation, and hospital stay.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized study involving 54 patients with midline laparotomy incisions, divided into binder and no-binder groups.
  • Preoperative and postoperative pulmonary function tests (vital capacity, incentive spirometry), pulse oximetry, and oxygen requirements were measured.
  • Postoperative outcomes including complications, pain scores (visual analog scale), time to ambulation, and length of hospital stay were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference was observed in postoperative vital capacity percentages between the binder and no-binder groups (64.7% vs. 54.6%).
