Migration

Migration is long-range, seasonal movement from one region or habitat to another. This common strategy, carried out by many different organisms around the world, is an adaptive response that typically corresponds to changes in an organism’s environment, like resource availability or climate. Migrations can involve huge groups of thousands of animals as well as single individuals traveling alone and can range from thousands of kilometers to just a few hundred meters.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Entomology
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Saddleback caterpillar stings are infrequently documented in Europe.
  • This case presents a rare instance of a toddler being stung by a saddleback caterpillar in France.

Observation:

  • A 2-year-old girl presented with localized swelling after a caterpillar sting in a French furniture store.
  • The caterpillar was not a common species in France and required internet research for identification as a saddleback caterpillar.

Findings:

  • The saddleback caterpillar was successfully identified as the cause of the sting.
  • The case involved the transatlantic importation of the saddleback caterpillar, likely via houseplants.

Implications:

  • Saddleback caterpillars pose an import risk to France, potentially arriving on plants like Areca trees.
  • Garden centers need to be aware and inspect/treat imported plants to mitigate this risk.
