Summary

The HELICA-Endoprosthesis, a new cementless canine hip implant, shows encouraging early results in dogs with hip osteoarthritis. While some complications occurred during the learning phase, most dogs regained weight-bearing ability quickly.

  • Postoperative monitoring included assessment of weight-bearing, complications, and radiographic findings.

    • All dogs were capable of weight-bearing on the operated leg one day post-surgery.
    • Complications included loosening of stem and/or cup components in five dogs, primarily attributed to technical errors during the learning phase.
    • Surgical revisions were successful in three of five cases; two required femoral head and neck excision.
    • Radiographic bone resorption was noted in two dogs without significant clinical lameness.
    • One dog experienced temporary ischial neuropraxy, with complete recovery within six weeks.

    Conclusions:

    • The HELICA-Endoprosthesis offers a potentially simpler surgical technique with shorter surgery times for canine hip replacement.
    • Early clinical results are encouraging, with rapid return to weight-bearing observed.
    • Further long-term follow-up, gait analysis, and histological evaluation are necessary for definitive assessment.
