Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Primary colorectal lymphomas (PCL) are rare malignancies.
  • Understanding their characteristics is crucial for diagnosis and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the incidence, presentation, characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of PCL.
  • To analyze data from a tertiary care center over a 25-year period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records of PCL cases.
  • Inclusion based on Dawson's criteria.
  • Data collected included demographics, risk factors, symptoms, diagnosis, histology, therapy, and follow-up.

Main Results:

  • Nine PCL cases identified (12.7% of GI lymphomas).
  • Mean age 44.2 years, male predominance; abdominal pain most common symptom.
  • Cecum most frequent site (55.6%), all stage I(E); Burkitt's and diffuse large B-cell lymphomas identified.
  • Surgery followed by chemotherapy was common; median survival 25 months, 2-year survival ~60%.

Conclusions:

  • PCL is a rare entity with distinct features.
  • Optimal management strategies for PCL remain debated.
