Background:

Nursing is a demanding profession requiring attention to nurse stress and burnout.
Healthcare administrators need to address these issues to ensure a stable workforce.
Previous tools may not adequately capture the nuances of nursing stress in specific contexts.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a tool for measuring nursing staff stress and burnout.
To identify key dimensions contributing to nurse stress.
To provide a practical instrument for healthcare managers.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at King Faisal University Hospital, Saudi Arabia.
A total of 260 registered nurses participated.
Scale development involved face validity, content validity, and principal component analysis (PCA).

Main Results:

Principal component analysis identified 3 main components: work aspects, working conditions, and workload, explaining 56.4% of the variance.
The developed scale demonstrated strong reliability with Cronbach's alpha = 0.8 and a split-half Spearman-Brown coefficient of 0.79.
The final 15-statement questionnaire was validated as a reliable measure of nursing stress and burnout.

Conclusions:

A short, valid, and reliable scale for assessing nurse stress and burnout was successfully developed.
The scale is suitable for use by healthcare managers in various medical settings.
Further research is recommended to apply this tool to broader samples of Saudi nurses.
