Summary

Waist circumference is the best indicator of metabolic syndrome in Chinese adults. Optimal cut-off values were identified for men and women across different age groups to assess obesity risks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the best anthropometric measurements for metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Chinese adults.
  • To propose optimal cut-off values for obesity indices.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 3,704 men and 6,392 women aged 18-85.
  • Measured weight, height, waist circumference (WC), hip circumference, fasting blood triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), glucose, and blood pressure (BP).
  • Analyzed relationships using correlation, ANOVA, regression, and ROC curve analysis.

Main Results:

  • All obesity indices showed positive associations with metabolic risk factors.
  • Waist circumference (WC) demonstrated the largest Area Under the Curve (AUC) for predicting ≥2 risk factors.
  • Optimal WC cut-off points were established: 89 cm for men, and 80.5cm, 82.5cm, 89.5cm for women aged <40, 40-60, and >60, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Waist circumference is the most effective anthropometric index for assessing metabolic risk factors in Chinese adults.
  • Recommended abdominal obesity indices increase with age in women.
