Summary

Saponification, a pancreatic finding on CT scans, can also occur in the mesentery. This study identifies extrapancreatic mesenteric saponification, suggesting it be considered in diagnosing mesenteric calcifications.

Background:

  • Saponification of the pancreas is a common finding on computed tomography (CT) scans.
  • Extrapancreatic mesenteric saponification has not been previously recognized in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A case of acute pancreatitis was monitored over a four-year period using serial CT scans.
  • Calcifications were observed in old extrapancreatic phlegmons.

Findings:

  • The study identified saponification in extrapancreatic mesenteric sites.
  • These mesenteric calcifications were linked to a history of pancreatitis.

Implications:

  • Saponification from pancreatitis should be included in the differential diagnosis for mesenteric calcifications.
