Leishmaniasis01:30

Leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is a protozoal disease caused by species of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through the bite of infected female sandflies. The parasite exists in two principal morphological forms during its life cycle. A sandfly acquires intracellular amastigotes from an infected reservoir host, such as a dog. Within the sandfly, these forms differentiate into motile, flagellated promastigotes. During a subsequent blood meal, promastigotes are injected into the human host, where they...
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever01:26

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a severe tick-borne illness caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a Gram-negative, coccobacillary bacterium. This pathogen is an obligate intracellular parasite, requiring a host cell for replication. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected tick. In the United States, the most important vectors are Dermacentor variabilis (American dog tick) and Dermacentor andersoni (Rocky Mountain wood tick), though other tick species may also serve as vectors.

Summary

A rare human infection with Dirofilaria repens, a zoonotic parasite, was documented in a patient from Craiova. This case highlights potential new disease patterns linked to environmental changes and global warming.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Parasitology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Dirofilaria repens infection is a zoonotic disease endemic in Southern Europe and Sri Lanka.
  • Human cases are infrequent, making each occurrence noteworthy for epidemiological understanding.

Observation:

  • A 27-year-old woman presented with a mobile, subconjunctival tumor on the bulbar area.
  • The patient resided in Craiova, an area not typically associated with Dirofilaria repens endemicity.
  • She reported no travel history to known endemic regions.

Findings:

  • Surgical removal of the subconjunctival formation revealed an immature Dirofilaria repens.
  • Microscopic examination confirmed the presence of the parasitic nematode.

Implications:

  • This case suggests that Dirofilaria repens infections may occur outside traditional endemic zones.
  • Environmental changes and global warming could facilitate the spread of such zoonotic diseases into new regions.
  • Increased vigilance and diagnostic awareness are necessary for identifying and managing rare parasitic infections in non-endemic areas.
