Cochlear implant (CI) users’ ability to hear in noise and their willingness to listen in noise both significantly impact their perceived communication success. These factors, speech recognition in noise and noise tolerance, are crucial for improving CI user experiences.

  • Participants also completed the Abbreviated Profile of Hearing Aid Benefit (APHAB) for self-reported communication difficulty.
  • BKB-SIN and ANL scores were compared between CI users and 23 NH listeners.
  • Main Results:

    • CI users performed significantly worse on the BKB-SIN test compared to NH listeners, but ANL scores were comparable.
    • BKB-SIN and ANL scores were not significantly correlated with each other.
    • Individually, BKB-SIN and ANL scores each explained over one-third of the variance in CI users' APHAB Global scores; together, they explained 72%.

    Conclusions:

    • Both speech recognition in noise and noise tolerance are strongly linked to how CI users perceive their communication abilities.
    • These measures appear to capture distinct aspects of communication experience, offering valuable clinical insights.
    • Establishing predictive criteria for BKB-SIN and ANL scores could help identify CI users needing further audiological rehabilitation.
