Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Background:

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare primary cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma.
It disproportionately affects elderly Caucasians and immunosuppressed individuals.
A novel polyomavirus association has reignited interest in MCC pathogenesis.

Purpose of the Study:

To summarize the key aspects of Merkel cell carcinoma.
To highlight diagnostic challenges and therapeutic options.

Main Methods:

Review of existing literature on Merkel cell carcinoma.
Analysis of typical and atypical histologic and cytologic features.
Discussion of treatment modalities and staging.

Main Results:

MCC presents with neuroendocrine features, often CK20 positive, but can have variable presentations.
