Erectile dysfunction after prostatectomy: an evaluation of the risk factors

Background:

• Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common concern following prostatectomy.
• Previous studies show varying rates and risk factors for post-prostatectomy ED.

Purpose of the Study:

• To assess the incidence of ED after prostatectomy.
• To identify risk factors associated with ED development post-surgery.

Main Methods:

• 246 men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) undergoing open prostatectomy or transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) were studied.
• Erectile function was assessed preoperatively and 6 months post-surgery using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).
• Cardiac risk was evaluated using American Heart Association guidelines.

Main Results:

• The overall incidence of new-onset moderate to severe ED post-surgery was 12.5%.
• Preoperative ED prevalence was 24.6% (TURP) and 25.9% (open prostatectomy).
• Postoperative ED incidence was 13.4% for TURP and 11.25% for open prostatectomy among men with no/mild preoperative ED.

Conclusions:

• Post-prostatectomy ED affects 12.5% of patients.
• Identified risk factors for ED include hypertension, diabetes mellitus, higher transfusion rates, elevated cardiac risk index, and older age.
