Researchers identified Plasmodium parasites in captive capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) using microscopy and molecular methods. Genetic analysis suggests a novel Plasmodium species, potentially named "Plasmodium hydrochaeri", infecting these South American rodents.
