Area of Science:

  • Plasmonics
  • Optics
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • Conventional optics principles are applied to design plasmonic devices.
  • A framework is needed to describe surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagation, diffraction, and interference on a chip.
  • Direct mapping of ultraviolet (UV) SPPs is crucial for advancing subwavelength optics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the first direct mapping of UV SPPs on an Al2O3/Al surface.
  • To observe UV SPP modes launched by various structures and their interference.
  • To contribute to the understanding of subwavelength optics on a chip.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing a UV-compatible near-field scanning optical microscope system.
  • Designing and fabricating Al2O3/Al surfaces with specific structures (1D slits, 2D groove arrays).
