When T cells with CD4 markers are activated, they give rise to two types of effector cells: helper T cells and regulatory T cells. Summary

Regulatory T cells (Treg cells) typically do not express Interleukin-2 (IL-2), but a small subset does. Mathematical models revealed that transcription factor ratios, not just amounts, influence IL-2 gene expression in individual Treg cells.

Background:

  • Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a key cytokine produced by T helper (Th) cells upon antigen stimulation.
  • Regulatory T cells (Treg cells), crucial for immune homeostasis, are activated similarly to Th cells but traditionally do not express IL-2.
  • Treg cells uniquely express the transcription factor FoxP3.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate IL-2 expression in individual Treg cells.
  • To develop mathematical models for IL-2 gene expression in single cells.
