Three new beta-dihydroagarofuran sesquiterpene polyol esters were isolated from Celastrus angulatus. These compounds showed moderate insecticidal activity against Mythimna separata and slight antitumor effects.
Area of Science:
- Natural Product Chemistry
- Organic Chemistry
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Celastrus angulatus root bark is a source of bioactive natural products.
- Sesquiterpene polyol esters with beta-dihydroagarofuran skeletons are known for diverse biological activities.
Purpose of the Study:
- To isolate and characterize new compounds from Celastrus angulatus root bark.
- To evaluate the insecticidal and antitumor potential of isolated compounds.
Main Methods:
- Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
- Structure elucidation via Mass Spectrometry (MS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectral data analysis.
- Bioactivity screening including insecticidal assays against Mythimna separata and antitumor assays against Bcap-37 cell line.
Main Results:
- Three new beta-dihydroagarofuran sesquiterpene polyol esters (NW12, NW27, NW31) and one known compound (NW30) were identified.
- Compounds 1-4 exhibited moderate stomach toxicity against Mythimna separata, with KD50 values ranging from 548.6 to 1720.0 microg/g.
- Compounds NW12 (1) and NW30 (3) displayed slight antitumor activity against the human breast cancer cell line Bcap-37 (IC50 > 50 microM).
Conclusions:
- The root bark of Celastrus angulatus yielded novel sesquiterpene polyol esters.
- The isolated compounds possess moderate insecticidal properties and limited antitumor activity.
- Further investigation into the structure-activity relationship of these compounds is warranted.
