Summary

Ambulatory electrocardiographic recording in healthy dogs revealed unexpected findings. Apparently healthy dogs exhibited sinus pauses exceeding two seconds and ventricular premature complexes during normal activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of 24-hour ambulatory ECG in healthy pet dogs.
  • To characterize the cardiac rhythm and rate variations in healthy dogs during normal daily activities.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-four hour ambulatory ECG recordings were performed on 16 healthy pet dogs (18.4–34 kg) in their home environment.
  • Medilog tape recorders were utilized for continuous data acquisition.
  • Recordings were analyzed for heart rate, rhythm abnormalities, and specific arrhythmias.

Main Results:

  • Complete 24-hour recordings were obtained from 10 dogs, with additional data from two others.
  • Maximum heart rates varied from 110 to 300 beats/minute; minimum rates ranged from 17 to 46 beats/minute.
  • Intermittent ventricular premature complexes were observed in apparently healthy dogs. Sinus pauses longer than two seconds (up to 5.7 seconds) were recorded in all but one dog, associated with sinus arrhythmia.

Conclusions:

  • Twenty-four hour ambulatory ECG is a viable method for assessing cardiac function in healthy dogs.
  • Sinus pauses and ventricular premature complexes can be present in apparently healthy dogs, highlighting the importance of ambulatory ECG for accurate diagnosis.
  • Findings suggest that marked sinus arrhythmia and prolonged sinus pauses may be normal physiological variations in healthy dogs.
