Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Mesotheliomas are rare neoplasms affecting serous membranes like the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium.
  • Asbestos exposure is a significant risk factor for developing mesotheliomas.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old male presented with acute surgical abdomen and hemoperitoneum.
  • Preoperative paraclinical investigations, including echography, were inconclusive for diagnosing the underlying condition.

Findings:

  • Emergency surgery revealed a hemorrhagic and necrotized peritoneal malignant mesothelioma.
  • Surgical management involved tumorectomy, electrocoagulation, and hemostasis using Gelaspon sponges.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering rare neoplasms in emergency abdominal presentations.
  • Effective surgical management can yield favorable outcomes for peritoneal malignant mesothelioma.
  • Diagnostic challenges highlight the need for advanced imaging or intraoperative findings in specific cases.
