Summary

Positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) can incidentally detect giant cell arteritis. Increased 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake in the aorta on PET/CT scans may indicate this condition.

Background:

  • 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is a key imaging modality for cancer staging.
  • Incidental findings during PET/CT can reveal significant comorbidities.

Observation:

  • A patient undergoing PET/CT for renal transitional cell carcinoma staging exhibited diffuse 18F-FDG uptake in the aorta and proximal arteries.
  • CT images revealed a thickened aortic wall, prompting further investigation.

Findings:

  • Biopsy confirmed giant cell arteritis in the patient.
  • The imaging findings correlated with biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis.

Implications:

  • Increased aortic FDG uptake on PET/CT can be an indicator of giant cell arteritis, a potentially serious vascular condition.
