Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between periodontitis, tooth loss, and cognitive impairment in the elderly.
  • To test the hypothesis that tooth loss as a proxy for chronic periodontitis increases cognitive impairment risk.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based study of 1336 subjects aged 60-79 years (Study of Health in Pomerania).
  • Cognitive function assessed using the Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE).
  • Tobit regression analyses were employed, adjusting for potential confounders.

Main Results:

  • Decreased tooth count correlated with lower MMSE scores in both females and males (age-adjusted).
  • Tooth loss was significantly associated with cognitive impairment in females (fully adjusted models).
  • No significant association was found between tooth loss and cognitive impairment in males (fully adjusted models).
