Summary

Orthograde retreatment of root canals filled with Resilon resulted in significantly more residual filling material compared to gutta-percha. This indicates gutta-percha is more efficiently removed during retreatment procedures.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Complete removal of root canal filling materials is crucial for successful endodontic retreatment.
  • Gutta-percha and Resilon are common root canal obturation materials with different physical and chemical properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of orthograde retreatment in removing residual filling material from root canals obturated with either gutta-percha or Resilon.
  • To evaluate the influence of canal level on residual material amount and retreatment time.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty single-rooted human teeth were instrumented and divided into two groups: gutta-percha/AH26 sealer and Resilon/Epiphany system.
  • Obturated canals were retreated using Gates-Glidden drills, larger files, and chloroform.
  • Residual material was quantified at three canal levels using digital photography and stereomicroscopic analysis.

Main Results:

  • The Resilon group exhibited significantly more residual filling material on canal walls compared to the gutta-percha group (P = 0.009).
  • Canal level significantly affected residual material in the Resilon group (P = 0.013).
  • No significant difference in retreatment time was observed between the two groups (P = 0.381).

Conclusions:

  • Orthograde retreatment of Resilon-filled root canals is less efficient in material removal than gutta-percha.
  • The findings suggest that clinicians may encounter greater challenges in completely cleaning canals obturated with Resilon.
