Summary

Two rabbits developed intraocular spindle cell neoplasms, possibly linked to chronic inflammation or eye trauma. These tumors share similarities with feline post-traumatic ocular sarcomas, highlighting a potential shared etiology in domestic animals.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Veterinary Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Intraocular neoplasms are rare in rabbits.
  • Previous ocular conditions like chronic inflammation, lens-induced uveitis, cataract, and glaucoma can predispose eyes to disease.

Observation:

  • Two adult rabbits presented with nonvisual eyes due to chronic inflammatory disease or secondary complications.
  • Histopathology revealed invasive, poorly differentiated spindle cell neoplasms associated with lens fragments in both globes.

Findings:

  • Bacterial and Encephalitozoon cuniculi infections were ruled out via Gram stains and PCR.
  • Immunohistochemistry showed strong vimentin expression, with negative results for smooth muscle actin, cytokeratin, S100, and desmin.
  • The histologic features closely resemble post-traumatic ocular sarcomas observed in cats.

Implications:

  • Chronic intraocular inflammation and trauma are potential triggers for these rabbit neoplasms.
  • This finding suggests a possible shared pathogenesis of ocular sarcomas in domestic animals.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms and risk factors involved.
