Area of Science:

  • Medical Genetics
  • Developmental Biology
  • Teratology

Background:

  • Sirenomelia, or Mermaid syndrome, is a rare congenital malformation characterized by the fusion of the lower extremities.
  • It is associated with a high incidence of other anomalies, including genitourinary, gastrointestinal, neural tube, and vertebral defects.

Observation:

  • A case of sirenomelia in a neonate born to a mother with a history of five pregnancies is presented.
  • The infant exhibited fusion of both lower limbs, absent genitalia, an imperforate anus, and a single umbilical artery.

Findings:

  • The neonate with sirenomelia presented with a complex set of caudal developmental anomalies.
  • Autopsy confirmed the presence of multiple internal anomalies, consistent with the known spectrum of sirenomelia.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the severe prognosis associated with sirenomelia and the importance of prenatal diagnosis.
  • Further research into the genetic and environmental factors contributing to sirenomelia is warranted to improve outcomes.
