Summary

A new point-source method using Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) offers a faster and safer alternative for rotational uniformity and sensitivity testing in SPECT imaging. This method provides comparable results to the conventional approach, reducing equipment damage risks and evaluation time.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Medical Imaging Physics
  • Quality Assurance in SPECT

Background:

  • Conventional AAPM Report 52 rotational uniformity and sensitivity tests utilize a Cobalt-57 (Co-57) sheet source, posing risks of collimator damage and requiring significant setup time.
  • Accurate assessment of maximum sensitivity variation (MSV) is crucial for SPECT system performance and image quality.
  • There is a need for a more efficient, safer, and equally accurate method for routine SPECT quality control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate an alternative point-source method for AAPM Report 52 rotational uniformity and sensitivity testing.
  • To compare the precision, correlation, and consistency of the new point-source method with the conventional sheet-source method.
  • To evaluate the advantages of the point-source method in terms of time efficiency and safety.

Main Methods:

  • A Technetium-99m (Tc-99m) point source was used near the isocenter, acquiring flood images at four gantry positions.
  • Corrections were applied for Tc-99m decay, photon flux curvature, and source-to-detector distance variations.
  • MSV was calculated and compared between the point-source and conventional Co-57 sheet-source methods across multiple detectors and simulated variations.

Main Results:

  • The point-source method demonstrated a high degree of correlation and consistency with the conventional method.
  • The precision of the point-source method (0.145%) was lower than the conventional method (0.04%) but deemed sufficient for MSV testing.
  • No significant dependence of MSV on total image counts (5-20 million) was observed with the point-source method.

Conclusions:

  • The developed Tc-99m point-source method is a viable and effective alternative for SPECT rotational uniformity and sensitivity testing.
  • This new methodology significantly reduces testing time and minimizes the risk of damage to gamma camera components.
  • The method's ability to evaluate multiple detectors simultaneously enhances efficiency in SPECT quality assurance protocols.
