Summary

Most concha bullosa (CB) cases show a simple air-filled cavity. However, this study found that extraordinary pathologies like polyps, cholesteatoma, and fungus balls can also occur within the concha bullosa.

Background:

  • Concha bullosa (CB) is an anatomical variation of the nasal cavity.
  • Understanding associated pathologies is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively analyze the pathological entities found within the concha bullosa.

Main Methods:

  • Surgical interventions on 136 patients with 234 concha bullosa cases were reviewed.
  • Radiological and histopathological findings were analyzed retrospectively.

Main Results:

  • A pneumatized cavity was observed in 86.8% of cases.
  • Other pathologies included purulent secretion (5.6%), bony septum, pyocele, polyp, ossifying fibroma, fungus ball, and cholesteatoma.

Conclusions:

  • While most concha bullosa cases are simple air cavities, associated extraordinary pathologies must be considered.
  • These findings highlight the importance of thorough evaluation of concha bullosa.
