Summary

Kuru, the first human prion disease, was transmitted to chimpanzees, revolutionizing neurodegenerative disease research. This discovery paved the way for understanding other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.

Findings:

  • Detailed history, epidemiology, clinical presentation, neuropathology, and molecular genetics of kuru are reviewed.
