Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) like MLR and P300 can help diagnose stuttering and show neural changes after speech therapy. These electrophysiological tests reveal improvements in stuttering individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize AEPs in individuals who stutter compared to a control group.
  • To evaluate changes in AEPs following speech-language treatment for stuttering.

Main Results:

  • Pre-treatment, altered MLR and P300 results were observed in individuals who stutter.
  • Post-treatment, decreased wave I latency in BAER (66.7%), decreased PA latency in MLR (16.7%), and decreased P300 latency (58.7%) were noted in the stuttering group.
  • P300 latency also decreased in the control group post-treatment.

Conclusions:

  • Middle latency response (MLR) and P300 potentials effectively differentiated individuals who stutter from controls.
  • All three AEPs (BAER, MLR, P300) demonstrated neural plasticity in response to speech-language treatment.
