Summary

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) G894T gene polymorphism is linked to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) risk. Higher eNOS G894T polymorphism and 894T allele frequency were observed in AAA patients, correlating with larger aneurysm size.

Background:

  • Genetic risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are not well understood.
  • Investigating the association between endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene polymorphism and AAA development.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if eNOS gene polymorphism is a risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).

Main Methods:

  • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis was used.
  • Genotyping was performed on 61 patients with AAA and 62 healthy controls.

Main Results:

  • The eNOS G894 T/T genotype and 894T allele frequencies were significantly higher in AAA patients compared to controls (P = .01 and P = .03, respectively).
  • eNOS G894 T/T polymorphism and 894T allele frequency were associated with larger AAA dimensions in affected individuals.

Conclusions:

  • This study suggests a relationship between eNOS G894T polymorphism and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA).
  • Further research with larger cohorts is warranted to confirm these findings.
