Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of latent infections in patients with chronic allergic conjunctivitis.
  • To explore the relationship between eosinophil levels and concurrent infections.

Main Methods:

  • A 5-year prospective study evaluated 236 patients (472 eyes).
  • Conjunctival scrapings were analyzed cytologically.
  • Patients were subgrouped based on eosinophil cell percentages.

Main Results:

  • Latent infections were found in 37% of eyes, with common pathogens including Candida albicans, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Chlamydia trachomatis, and Staphylococcus aureus.
  • A strong correlation was observed between eosinophil cell percentage and infection incidence, particularly bacterial infections.
  • All cases (100%) in the highest eosinophil subgroup had concurrent bacterial infections.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic allergic conjunctivitis can harbor latent infections.
  • Pathogens may trigger eosinophil activation, exacerbating allergic symptoms and disease chronicity.
