Background:

  • The 20th century saw a strong negative correlation between economic/social development and human fertility rates.
  • Over half the global population now resides in regions with below-replacement fertility levels.
  • Rapid population aging and potential decline pose significant socioeconomic challenges.

Observation:

  • New cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses examined the total fertility rate and Human Development Index (HDI).
  • A fundamental shift in the development-fertility relationship was observed as the 21st century began.
  • While development still reduces fertility at lower HDI levels, it now increases fertility at advanced HDI levels.

Findings:

  • The previously established negative development-fertility link has transformed into a J-shaped curve.
  • The Human Development Index (HDI) is now positively associated with fertility in highly developed countries.
  • Further socioeconomic development can reverse fertility decline in advanced economies.

Implications:

  • This reversal has the potential to mitigate rapid population aging.
  • It may alleviate socioeconomic issues linked to persistent very low fertility.
  • Policy challenges related to demographic shifts may be re-evaluated.
