Summary

High intensity shoulder contractions did not affect computer worker productivity or perceived exertion. However, these contractions reduced rest time in the upper trapezius muscle during pauses, warranting further investigation for pain prevention strategies.

  • Productivity, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), and upper trapezius electromyography (EMG) were measured.
  • Main Results:

    • High intensity shoulder elevation did not alter RPE or productivity during the pause or computer work.
    • No significant changes in upper trapezius EMG activity were observed.
    • A significant reduction in relative rest time of the clavicular trapezius was noted (p < 0.04).

    Conclusions:

    • Implementing high intensity contractions during computer work may be feasible without negatively impacting productivity or perceived effort.
    • The reduction in clavicular trapezius rest requires further study before recommending high intensity shoulder elevations.
    • Further research is needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of integrating high intensity contractions into computer work routines for pain prevention.
