Summary

Radiation therapy effectively treated a recurrent hemangioma in a young horse, promoting wound healing and a full return to athletic activity. This approach offers a promising alternative for complex equine tumor cases.

Background:

  • Recurrent hemangiomas can pose significant challenges in equine limb treatment.
  • Previous surgical excisions failed to resolve the lesion and resulted in a nonhealing defect.

Observation:

  • A 13-month-old Standardbred colt presented with a recurrent hemangioma on the coronary band.
  • The lesion was refractory to multiple surgical interventions, leading to chronic skin and hoof damage.

Findings:

  • Electron beam radiation therapy (14 MV) was administered at a total dose of 36 Gy in six fractions.
  • Complete wound healing occurred via second intention over four months post-treatment.
  • The colt returned to race training six months after therapy completion and remained sound with no tumor recurrence at 20 months post-treatment.

Implications:

  • Electron beam radiation therapy is a viable and effective treatment for recurrent equine hemangiomas.
  • This modality can facilitate wound healing in complex cases, potentially avoiding limb amputation.
  • Successful outcomes suggest radiation therapy as a valuable option in equine tumor management.
