Ezrin expression in osteosarcoma is linked to poorer survival rates and increased recurrence. Identifying ezrin may help predict outcomes for patients with this bone cancer.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Ezrin is a key membrane cytoskeletal linker protein.
- Ezrin is implicated in the metastasis of primary osteosarcoma.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between ezrin expression and clinical parameters in osteosarcoma.
- To determine the prognostic value of ezrin expression in osteosarcoma patients.
Main Methods:
- Seventy patients with histologically confirmed, metastasis-free osteosarcoma were analyzed.
- Immunohistochemical staining (IHC) was used to assess ezrin expression in tumor specimens.
- Clinical parameters were retrospectively reviewed.
Main Results:
- Ezrin expression was observed in 55.7% of patients.
- Ezrin-positive patients showed higher rates of osteoblastic histology and elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels.
- Ezrin expression correlated with poorer response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, increased recurrence rates, and significantly worse 5-year event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS).
Conclusions:
- Ezrin expression, detected by IHC, is a negative prognostic factor for osteosarcoma survival.
- Identifying ezrin expression provides valuable prognostic information for managing primary osteosarcoma.
- Combined assessment of ezrin status and chemoresponsiveness offers refined prognostic insights.
