Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and evaluate the impact of specialist nursing interventions on the care and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases (Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, British Nursing Index) up to September 2008.
  • Included studies were randomized controlled trials, controlled before and after studies, and interrupted time series studies focusing on gastroenterology and IBD specialist nurses.
  • Data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two investigators.

Main Results:

  • One low-quality randomized controlled trial involving 100 IBD patients was included.
  • Nurse-led counseling showed a non-statistically significant improvement in mental health scores at 6 months compared to routine care.
  • No statistically significant differences were found in other pooled assessments of physical and psychological well-being.
