    Summary

The tooth cementum annulation (TCA) technique for age estimation is unreliable in older adults. This study found TCA provides reasonably accurate age estimates only in young adults, with significant underestimation in those over 40.

    Area of Science:

    • Forensic Anthropology
    • Bioarchaeology
    • Dental Anatomy

    Background:

    • Tooth cementum annulation (TCA) is a method for estimating individual age.
    • Previous studies present conflicting data on TCA accuracy and applicability.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the accuracy and bias of TCA age estimation.
    • To assess TCA's reliability across different age groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Examined 116 teeth from 65 individuals of known age and sex.
    • Analyzed undecalcified, unstained cross-sections (60-80 µm) from the root's middle third.
    • Counted incremental lines on enhanced digital images.

    Main Results:

    • Maximal line counts showed the best correlation with actual age.
    • Age estimation accuracy and bias decreased with increasing age.
    • Significant underestimation of age occurred in individuals over 40 years old.

    Conclusions:

    • TCA provides reasonably accurate age estimates only in young adults.
    • The method's reliability diminishes significantly in older individuals.
    • TCA should be used cautiously for age estimation, preferably alongside macroscopic examination.
