  • To investigate blood pressure parameters in COPD patients experiencing sleep desaturation unrelated to sleep apnea.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen COPD patients and fourteen controls underwent spirometry, blood gas analysis, polysomnography, and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM).
  • Blood pressure was assessed during wakefulness and sleep.
  • Participants had no prior history of hypertension.

Main Results:

  • COPD patients exhibited higher blood pressure levels during wakefulness, sleep, and 24-hour periods compared to controls.
  • The typical nocturnal blood pressure dip was attenuated in the COPD group.
  • Diastolic blood pressure during wakefulness and maximum values during sleep/24-hours were exceptions, not showing significant differences.

Conclusions:

  • COPD patients with sleep desaturation demonstrate significantly elevated systolic and diastolic blood pressure compared to controls.
  • The findings suggest a link between COPD-related sleep desaturation and increased blood pressure, even in the absence of hypertension history or sleep apnea.
