Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction mediated by Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies. Summary

Certain azodyes directly cause anaphylactic shock, not through protein interactions. Even non-precipitating azodyes can trigger allergic reactions in sensitized guinea pigs.

These effects were independent of azoprotein formation.

Conclusions:

Azodyes themselves are responsible for inducing anaphylactic shock.
Azoprotein formation is not a prerequisite for azodye-induced anaphylaxis.
A direct mechanism exists for azodye-mediated allergic reactions.
