Liabilities of competence

All too often, the personal vulnerabilities of competent individuals lead them to take on the work of others and extend themselves beyond reasonable bounds. The special talents of competent individuals need to be conserved for best utilization. Competent persons need to carefully assess how professional and personal time is utilized. Rather than supporting managers who chronically overwork, supervisors should intervene to assist these managers in taking steps to protect themselves from a lifestyle that decreases career longevity and promotes psychological discontent.
