Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder01:28

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by recurrent obsessions, compulsions, or both, which consume significant time and interfere with daily functioning. Obsessions involve persistent, intrusive, and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that evoke anxiety. Common examples include irrational fears of contamination or harm. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions. For instance, individuals...

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle with...
Depressive Disorders: Etiology01:27

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...
Bipolar Disorder01:30

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition marked by significant mood fluctuations, including episodes of mania and depression. Elevated energy levels, heightened mood or irritability, impulsive behavior, reduced sleep needs, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, and distractibility characterize mania. Individuals with bipolar disorder often alternate between depressive and manic states, with periods of emotional stability lasting an average of six months to a year.
Oppositional Defiant Disorder01:30

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

A persistent pattern of angry or irritable mood, defiant behavior, or vindictiveness characterizes Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Symptoms must occur over at least six months, involve interactions with individuals beyond siblings, and meet specific diagnostic criteria to be clinically significant. The disorder affects emotional regulation, social interactions, and behavior, often manifesting early in life and influencing long-term development and functioning.
Diagnostic Criteria and...
Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Summary

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is linked to altered brain connectivity. Patients with OCD show heightened functional connectivity in ventral corticostriatal regions, particularly the orbitofrontal cortex, correlating with symptom severity.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Neuroimaging

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) models implicate corticostriatal network dysfunction.
  • Previous neuroimaging studies support network models but lack detailed connectivity analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate functional connectivity disturbances in OCD using resting-state fMRI.
  • To test the hypothesis of altered connectivity in ventral corticostriatal regions.

Main Methods:

  • Case-control cross-sectional study involving 21 OCD patients and 21 controls.
  • Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analyzed via voxelwise statistical parametric mapping.
  • Functional connectivity assessed for four striatal seed regions (dorsal/ventral caudate, dorsal/ventral putamen).

Main Results:

  • Distinct dorsal and ventral striatal connectivity patterns observed in both groups.
  • OCD patients exhibited increased functional connectivity along the ventral corticostriatal pathway, involving the orbitofrontal cortex.
  • Connectivity between the ventral caudate/nucleus accumbens and anterior orbitofrontal cortex correlated with OCD symptom severity.
  • Reduced functional connectivity was noted in the dorsal striatum-lateral prefrontal cortex and ventral striatum-ventral tegmental area pathways in OCD patients.

Conclusions:

  • Findings support the hypothesis of functional alterations in brain corticostriatal networks in OCD.
  • Abnormal and heightened functional connectivity in ventrolimbic corticostriatal regions is a key feature of OCD.
