Child care centers significantly impact preschool physical activity. New best-practice guidelines for the child care physical activity environment were developed, but most centers currently fall short of meeting them.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Health
- Child Development
- Public Health Nutrition
Background:
- Child care settings are crucial for preschool-aged children's physical activity levels.
- Existing recommendations do not comprehensively address the physical activity environment within child care.
- Concerns exist that organized child care may not fully support children's physical activity needs.
Purpose of the Study:
- To present the Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-assessment for Child Care (NPA SACC) best-practice guidelines.
- To evaluate current practices in North Carolina child care centers against these guidelines.
- To identify gaps in the physical activity environment within child care settings.
Main Methods:
- Developed best-practice guidelines through extensive review of existing literature and expert input.
- Assessed 96 child care centers in North Carolina using the developed guidelines.
- Examined eight components of the child care physical activity environment.
Main Results:
- Most child care centers in the study did not meet a majority of the best-practice guidelines.
- Few centers achieved high adherence across the eight recommended components.
- Significant room for improvement exists in implementing comprehensive physical activity environments.
Conclusions:
- Establishing and implementing comprehensive physical activity guidelines in child care is essential.
- Current child care environments often lack sufficient support for children's physical activity.
- Further research and intervention are needed to improve physical activity levels and promote healthier outcomes for children in child care settings.
