This study analyzed skew deviation (SD) diagnoses and treatments in ten patients. Comprehensive strabological evaluation aids in identifying underlying lesions for tailored patient care, with optical rehabilitation and botulinum injections recommended.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Neurology
- Pediatrics
Background:
- This study investigated diagnostic and treatment strategies for skew deviation (SD).
- A prospective, observational, and longitudinal design was employed.
- Data were collected from a tertiary medical center between September 2007 and May 2008.
Observation:
- Ten patients with skew deviation (SD) were analyzed.
- Diagnoses included multiple sclerosis, arteriovenous malformation, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, ischemic encephalopathy, cortical atrophy, corpus callosum hypoplasia, and thalamic hemorrhage.
- Associated conditions were psychomotor retardation (80%), Cogan apraxia, Parinaud syndrome, see-saw nystagmus, Foville syndrome, and hemiplegic alterations.
Findings:
- Associated strabismus included exotropia (5), esotropia (3), hypertropia (2), and dissociated vertical deviation (1).
- Cranial nerve lesions (II, III, VII) were identified.
- Comprehensive strabological assessment facilitated precise diagnosis of underlying lesions.
Implications:
- Accurate diagnosis of the causative lesion is crucial for managing relapsing diseases.
- Personalized treatment plans are essential for effective patient management.
- Optical rehabilitation and botulinum toxin injections are indicated as key therapeutic interventions.
