Each faculty member reviewed the literature base of a different aspect of urgency and along with their personal clinical experience provided a base of evidence for discussion.

This overview summarises relevant published literature and the current clinical experience of the authors.

Whilst the mechanisms producing the sensation of urgency are still not fully understood and we are working within a definition that may complicate measurement and treatment, our pressing need is to effectively manage our patients for whom the practical nature of urgency can be all too apparent.

Health care professionals have an important role to play today in helping to alleviate the widespread problem of urgency and its consequences.
