Background:

Existing instruments inadequately assess combined team functioning and organizational factors for healthcare personnel.
A concise tool is needed for regular measurement of team vitality to evaluate interventions.
The Healthcare Team Vitality Instrument was developed to address these gaps.

Purpose of the Study:

To refine, shorten, and validate the Healthcare Team Vitality Instrument.
To create a brief, reliable measure for assessing healthcare team vitality.

Main Methods:

The study involved two phases: preliminary data collection and cognitive interviews for item refinement, followed by factor analysis to identify the structure of a brief form.
Data were collected from healthcare personnel in inpatient units in 2006 and 2007.

Main Results:

Exploratory factor analyses identified a four-factor structure for the instrument.
The key dimensions of healthcare team vitality were found to be support structures, engagement and empowerment, patient care transitions, and team communication.

Conclusions:

The validated Healthcare Team Vitality Instrument can enhance management practices and knowledge in healthcare settings.
The instrument supports efforts to improve work environments and promote the retention of nurses and other healthcare professionals.
