Development of the Oral Microbiota01:28

Development of the Oral Microbiota

The establishment of the oral microbiome begins before birth, challenging the long-held belief that the fetal oral cavity is sterile. The presence of oral microbes such as Streptococcus and Fusobacterium in amniotic fluid suggests that microbial exposure may occur in utero, potentially through translocation from the maternal oral or gastrointestinal tract. This early colonization primes the neonatal immune system and sets the stage for subsequent microbial succession. Maternal health,...
Teratogenicity01:07

Teratogenicity

The ability of a drug to produce structural deformations and functional abnormalities in the developing embryo or the fetus is called teratogenicity, and the drug producing this effect is known as a teratogen. Teratogenic effects include stillbirth, miscarriage, intrauterine growth restriction, and neurocognitive delay. A teratogen may affect the embryo at different stages of development, which is important in determining the type and extent of the damage. During blastocyst formation, the early...
Pathophysiology of Diabetes01:20

Pathophysiology of Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia. The four categories of diabetes are type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, other specific types of diabetes, and gestational diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is characterized by autoimmune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β cells, with environmental factors potentially triggering this process in genetically susceptible individuals. Despite many not having a family history, certain genes increase susceptibility, suggesting a...
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events, are a...

Summary

Hurricane Katrina impacted perinatal care, but adverse birth outcomes were mainly seen in highly exposed pregnant women. Postpartum and pregnant women experienced similar mental health and behavioral changes as other survivors.

Area of Science:

  • Perinatal Health
  • Disaster Medicine
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Hurricane Katrina caused significant disruption to healthcare services.
  • Understanding the impact on perinatal health is crucial for disaster preparedness.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review existing literature and present new data on Hurricane Katrina's effects on pregnant and postpartum women.
  • To assess adverse birth outcomes, mental health, and health behaviors in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of Hurricane Katrina's impact on perinatal health.
  • Analysis of data from research on pregnant and postpartum women affected by the hurricane.

Main Results:

  • Short-term compromise in obstetric, prenatal, and neonatal care.
  • Increases in preterm birth, low birthweight, and maternal complications were limited to highly exposed women.
  • Pregnant and postpartum women showed similar rates of PTSD and depression compared to other exposed individuals.
  • Health behaviors like smoking and breastfeeding were negatively affected; nutrition was impacted by resource limitations.
  • Most outcomes were similar to the general population exposed to the disaster, with exceptions for severely exposed individuals.

Conclusions:

  • Post-disaster concerns for pregnant and postpartum women largely mirrored those of the general affected population.
  • Disaster planning should prioritize peripartum needs like breastfeeding support, depression, and smoking cessation.
  • Contraception access is essential.
  • Severely exposed women and infants require additional care, but many women demonstrate resilience post-disaster.
