Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor) in children and adults can be treated effectively. Both medication and surgical cerebrospinal fluid diversion successfully resolved symptoms in patients.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Ophthalmology

Background:

  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) is a neurological condition characterized by increased intracranial pressure without a clear cause.
  • Diagnosis relies on clinical presentation (headache, papilledema) and exclusion of other pathologies via cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroimaging.

Observation:

  • Six patients aged 3-38 years presented with symptoms including headache, papilledema, visual impairment, VIth nerve palsy, and ataxia.
  • Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis was ruled out using angiography or MRI.
  • Cerebrospinal fluid and CT scans were normal, supporting the diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri.

Findings:

  • Pharmacological treatment (digitoxin, acetazolamide, furosemide, corticosteroids) improved symptoms in two patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Surgical cerebrospinal fluid diversion (to the right atrium or peritoneal cavity) rapidly resolved symptoms in the remaining four patients.
  • Implications:

    • This study highlights effective treatment strategies for idiopathic intracranial hypertension.
    • Both medical management and surgical intervention offer viable options for symptom reversal.
    • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing this condition and preventing long-term complications.
