Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation01:20

Overview Of Cell Separation And Isolation

Cell separation was first achieved in 1964 by S. H. Seal, who separated large tumor cells from the smaller blood cells using filtration. Two years later, Pohl and Hawk performed experiments on how cells respond differently to a nonuniform electric field based on the cell type. Such observations were the inception of cell separation methods, which allow isolating a single cell type from a heterogeneous sample.
Separation of Sister Chromatids02:17

Separation of Sister Chromatids

At the transition from prophase to metaphase, there is a reduction in cohesion along the chromosomal arms, resulting in the resolution of sister chromatids. However, residual cohesin connections remain to hold the sister chromatids together until the transition from metaphase to anaphase. The residual connection prevents any premature separation of sister chromatids, blocking the risks of aneuploidy within the daughter cells.
At the onset of anaphase, separase, a proteolytic enzyme, is...

A Single-Component System01:24

A Single-Component System

In the field of chemistry, the terms "component" and "phase" hold significant importance. A component refers to a chemically distinct substance in a system that has specific properties. It is chemically homogeneous, meaning it has the same properties throughout. For example, in a mixture of salt and water, both salt and water are considered separate components because they have different chemical properties. On the other hand, a phase is a form of matter that has a consistent chemical...

Two Components: Liquid–Liquid Systems

A pressure-composition phase diagram explicitly describes the behavior of an ideal solution of two volatile liquids under varying pressures and compositions. A pressure-composition diagram has two main curves. The bubble point curve represents the plot of pressure versus liquid mole fraction. It indicates the pressure at which the first bubble of vapor forms from the liquid phase as the system pressure decreases. The dew point curve is the pressure versus vapor mole fraction. It indicates the...
Classifying Matter by Composition03:35

Classifying Matter by Composition

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures
According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures.
A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated.
A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

Summary

The Ramirez components separation technique for abdominal hernia repair is popular due to its anatomical basis and success. This article highlights Donald Herron Young

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Techniques
  • Hernia Repair
  • Abdominal Surgery

Background:

  • Components separation, popularized by Ramirez et al. in 1990, is a widely used abdominal hernia repair method.
  • The technique's popularity stems from its anatomical principles and clinical effectiveness.

Discussion:

  • This article provides historical context for the components separation technique.
  • It aims to credit Donald Herron Young for his earlier work on external oblique relaxing incisions.

Key Insights:

  • Donald Herron Young described a similar concept for epigastric hernia repair in 1961.
  • This work predates the Ramirez components separation technique.

Outlook:

  • Revisiting the history of surgical procedures enhances understanding of their evolution.
