Summary

Researchers developed a new, less invasive model for creating corrosive esophagitis in rats. This method avoids general anesthesia and laparotomy, allowing for easier study of esophageal injury and potential treatments.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Experimental Surgery
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Caustic esophagitis presents a significant clinical challenge, prompting the development of various experimental models.
  • Existing models, such as the Gehanno model, often require invasive procedures like general anesthesia and laparotomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To establish a novel, practical, and non-invasive experimental model for inducing corrosive esophagitis.
  • To provide an alternative to current invasive methods for studying esophageal injury.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty rats were utilized, with their stomachs accessed via a guidance catheter under ether anesthesia.
  • A Fogarty catheter was introduced, inflated within the stomach, and then withdrawn. The esophageal entrance was subsequently closed.

  • Rats were divided into a control group (isotonic solution) and an injury group (%40 NaOH), with esophageal examination after 28 days.
  • Main Results:

    • Histopathological evaluation revealed no abnormalities in the control group.
    • The injury group exhibited significant submucosal collagen increase and damage to the muscularis mucosa and tunica muscularis (p < 0.005; p < 0.003).

    Conclusions:

    • Corrosive esophagitis was successfully induced without the need for general anesthesia or laparotomy.
    • This model creates burns throughout the esophagus, differing from other models that localize burns to the lower esophagus.
    • The developed model is less invasive, easier to apply, and suitable for evaluating treatment agents for corrosive esophagitis.
