Summary

Major depressive disorder (MDD) patients showed impaired cognitive performance on effortful tasks, even after symptom reduction. This suggests persistent deficits in attention and executive functioning in major depressive disorder.

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with cognitive impairments.
  • The long-term impact of depressive symptoms on cognitive processing remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate automatic and effortful information processing in patients with MDD over time.
  • To assess cognitive performance using the Stroop paradigm in relation to symptom reduction.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study involving 19 MDD patients and matched controls.
  • The Stroop paradigm (Color, Word, Color-Word conditions) was administered at baseline and after 6 months.
  • Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) assessed symptom severity.

Main Results:

  • MDD patients performed similarly to controls on automatic tasks (Color, Word).
  • Patients with MDD were impaired on the effortful Color-Word task at both time points.
  • Cognitive deficits in effortful processing persisted despite significant symptom reduction.

  • These deficits in attention and executive functioning may not resolve with symptom improvement.
