Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy01:26

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Summary

Single access laparoscopic splenectomy offers a less painful, more cosmetic approach for select patients. This minimally invasive technique provides faster recovery and excellent outcomes for conditions like idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Surgical innovation

Background:

  • Traditional laparoscopic splenectomy utilizes 4-5 trocars.
  • Single access laparoscopy is an emerging technique with potential benefits.
  • Single access laparoscopic splenectomy has not been previously reported.

Observation:

  • A case of single access laparoscopic splenectomy is presented.
  • A 24-year-old male with refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura underwent the procedure.
  • A multi-instrument flexible single incision port was used through a 2.5-cm incision.

Findings:

  • The splenectomy was completed in just over 2 hours.
  • The patient experienced a favorable outcome with improved platelet count.
  • The patient was discharged with a single, cosmetically pleasing incision.

Implications:

  • Single access laparoscopic splenectomy is feasible for select patients.
  • This technique may lead to reduced postoperative pain.
  • Enhanced cosmesis and potentially faster recovery are key advantages.
