Summary

This study reports the first case of extraskeletal osteosarcoma with partial spontaneous regression. Immune system involvement via T lymphocytes is hypothesized to trigger this rare cancer regression phenomenon.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Immunology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor.
  • Spontaneous tumor regression is an unusual phenomenon in cancer biology.

Observation:

  • A 57-year-old woman with proximal thigh extraskeletal osteosarcoma underwent resection.
  • Pathological examination revealed decreased tumor cells centrally, replaced by fibrocollagenous tissue.

Findings:

  • The mass showed infiltration by CD8(+), T-cell-restricted intracellular antigen-1 (TIA-1)(+), granzyme B(+) T lymphocytes.
  • These findings suggest T lymphocyte-mediated immune system involvement.

Implications:

  • This case is the first documented instance of partial spontaneous regression in extraskeletal osteosarcoma.
