Bacterial meningitis can cause profound hearing loss. Early cochlear implantation (CI) is recommended for post-meningitic deafness to improve speech discrimination outcomes.

  • Classification of intraoperative cochlear ossification.

    • Labyrinthitis ossificans was present in 62% of patients at surgery.
    • Significant ossification (Stage II) occurred as early as 21 days post-meningitis.
    • Partial cochlear implant insertion occurred in 9 patients due to ossification.
    • Open-set speech discrimination was achieved by 37% of children and 23% of adults.

    Conclusions:

    • Early cochlear implantation is recommended for patients with profound deafness secondary to meningitis.
    • Prompt intervention may mitigate the effects of labyrinthitis ossificans.
    • Guidelines should emphasize timely evaluation and surgical intervention.
